Bio

Lonnie Brooks, born Lee Baker Jr. on December 18, 1933, in Dubuisson, Louisiana, was a powerhouse in the American blues scene, known for his fiery guitar work and gritty, soulful vocals. His music blended Chicago blues with Louisiana swamp pop, rock 'n' roll, and R&B, creating a distinctive sound that made him a standout figure in the genre. Brooks began his career performing under the name Guitar Junior in the 1950s, gaining regional success with songs like “Family Rules.” After moving to Chicago in the early 1960s, he changed his stage name to Lonnie Brooks and immersed himself in the vibrant blues scene of the city.

Brooks' breakthrough came in the late 1970s when he signed with Alligator Records, releasing *Bayou Lightning* in 1979. The album was a critical success and helped cement his place in the blues world. His dynamic stage presence and signature “voodoo blues” style won over audiences across the U.S. and internationally. Albums like *Hot Shot* and *Wound Up Tight* showcased his ability to blend heartfelt storytelling with electrifying guitar solos, earning him a loyal following and praise from critics and fellow musicians alike.

Throughout his career, Lonnie Brooks was not only a performer but also a mentor and father figure in the blues community. He passed the torch to his sons, Ronnie Baker Brooks and Wayne Baker Brooks, both of whom became accomplished blues musicians in their own right. Lonnie often performed alongside them, keeping the family’s musical legacy alive on stage. His influence extended beyond his own recordings, as he helped shape the modern Chicago blues sound and inspired countless younger artists.

Lonnie Brooks passed away on April 1, 2017, but his legacy lives on through his music, his family, and the many lives he touched with his passionate performances. He remains a towering figure in blues history—a bridge between the traditional Delta roots and the electric energy of modern blues.
