Bio

Sly and Robbie are one of the most influential rhythm sections in modern music history. Comprised of drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare, the Jamaican duo helped shape the sound of reggae and dancehall from the 1970s onward. Their tight, inventive rhythms became the backbone of countless classic recordings, and their ability to blend deep reggae grooves with funk, rock, and later electronic influences set them apart from their peers.

The duo first gained prominence through their work with artists such as Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru, and Jimmy Cliff, crafting a sound that was both rooted in traditional reggae and boldly experimental. Sly’s precise, machine-like drumming paired with Robbie’s melodic, powerful basslines created a distinctive rhythmic chemistry that producers and artists around the world sought out. Their work on albums like Red by Black Uhuru helped push reggae into new, edgier territory and earned international acclaim, including Grammy recognition.

Beyond reggae, Sly and Robbie proved remarkably versatile, collaborating with global stars such as Grace Jones, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and Serge Gainsbourg. They also released music under their own name, experimenting with dub, electronic, and pop sounds. Through decades of innovation and collaboration, Sly and Robbie have left an enduring legacy, influencing generations of musicians and firmly establishing themselves as pioneers of modern rhythm and production.
