Bio

Nathan East is a world-renowned bass guitarist whose remarkable career spans over four decades and includes collaborations with some of the most iconic names in music. Born on December 8, 1955, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in San Diego, California, East began playing the cello before switching to bass guitar in his early teens. His deep musical roots and technical mastery quickly set him apart, and by the time he was in college at the University of California, San Diego, he was already performing with major artists.

East is best known as a founding member of the contemporary jazz group Fourplay, alongside Bob James, Harvey Mason, and Lee Ritenour. Since its inception in the early 1990s, Fourplay has released a string of successful albums that blend smooth jazz with elements of R\&B and pop, earning both critical acclaim and commercial success. East’s melodic approach to bass and his seamless ability to adapt across genres has made him a linchpin in the group’s distinctive sound.

In addition to his work with Fourplay, Nathan East has built an extraordinary resume as a session musician. He has played on thousands of recordings and toured with legends such as Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and George Harrison. His bass lines have graced hits like Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” This versatility and consistency have made East one of the most in-demand bassists in the industry.

Despite his extensive collaborative work, East has also pursued solo projects, including his self-titled debut solo album released in 2014, which featured appearances by Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, and Michael McDonald. Known for his warm tone, impeccable groove, and humble demeanor, Nathan East continues to be a respected and influential figure in music. His contributions not only showcase his talent but also highlight his commitment to excellence and the art of collaboration.
