Bio

**Steely Dan** is one of the most innovative and enigmatic bands to emerge from the 1970s, known for their sophisticated fusion of rock, jazz, funk, and R\&B. Formed by **Donald Fagen** and the late **Walter Becker**, the group gained a reputation for their meticulous studio work, cryptic lyrics, and a revolving door of elite session musicians. Unlike most rock bands of their era, Steely Dan leaned heavily into polished, intricate arrangements, marked by complex chord changes, tight horn sections, and an obsessive attention to detail. Their music sits at the intersection of intellect and groove, drawing in listeners who appreciate both cerebral songwriting and laid-back musical finesse.

Albums like *Aja* (1977) and *The Royal Scam* (1976) are often cited as high points in their discography and in the broader landscape of American music. *Aja*, in particular, is considered a masterpiece—an album that masterfully blends jazz virtuosity with pop accessibility, featuring standout tracks like “Deacon Blues,” “Peg,” and the title track. Fagen’s distinctive vocals and cynical, literate lyrics—often exploring themes of alienation, excess, and flawed characters—gave Steely Dan a voice unlike any other band. Becker’s musicianship and co-writing contributions helped shape the group’s lush, often mysterious sound.

Even after their peak commercial years, Steely Dan has maintained a devoted following. Their later work, including the Grammy-winning *Two Against Nature* (2000), proved they could still deliver sharp, stylish material decades into their career. Live performances, especially those led by Donald Fagen after Becker's passing in 2017, continue to draw audiences eager to hear their impeccably crafted songs. Steely Dan remains a symbol of musical sophistication—bridging the gap between pop and jazz with wit, irony, and a commitment to sonic excellence.

Becker and Fagen played together in a variety of bands from their time together studying at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson. They later moved to Los Angeles, gathered a band of musicians and began recording music. Their debut album, Can't Buy a Thrill (1972), established a template for their career, blending elements of rock, jazz, Latin music, R&B, and blues with sophisticated studio production and cryptic, irony-infused lyrics. The band enjoyed critical and commercial success with seven studio albums, peaking with their top-selling album Aja, released in 1977.

After Steely Dan disbanded in 1981, Becker and Fagen worked sporadically on solo projects through the 1980s, although a cult following remained devoted to the group's work. Since reuniting in 1993, Steely Dan has toured steadily and released two albums of new material, the first of which, Two Against Nature (2000), earned a Grammy Award for Album of the Year at the 43rd Grammy Awards. Their most recent album of new studio material is 2003's Everything Must Go, though they have continued to release compilations, box sets and live albums on a regular basis. After Becker's death in 2017, Fagen reluctantly continued the group with himself as the sole official member.

Steely Dan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and have sold more than 40 million records worldwide. VH1 ranked Steely Dan at No. 82 on their list of the "100 Greatest Musical Artists of All Time" in 2010, and Rolling Stone ranked them No. 15 on its list of the "20 Greatest Duos of All Time" in 2015.
