Res released her debut album, How I Do, in 2001 along with its first single "Golden Boys." Res (pronounced "Reese") is an American singer and songwriter best known for her eclectic blend of soul, rock, hip-hop, and R&B. Born Shareese Ballard in Philadelphia, she first gained widespread attention with her 2001 debut album How I Do, which featured the hit single “They-Say Vision.” The track became a breakout success, peaking on Billboard’s Dance and Modern Rock charts—an unusual feat for a Black female artist at the time, particularly one who blended genres so fluidly. Res’s music often defies easy categorization, combining soulful vocals with raw, alternative production and introspective lyricism.
Despite early critical acclaim, Res's career has been marked by challenges with record labels and industry expectations. After parting ways with MCA Records, she released music independently, including projects like Black.Girls.Rock! and collaborations with artists such as Talib Kweli (as part of the group Idle Warship). Her independent spirit and refusal to be boxed into a single genre have earned her a cult following and respect from peers across musical styles. Though not a mainstream fixture, Res remains a powerful voice in music—an artist who stands firmly by her creative vision and continues to inspire through her authenticity and resilience.
In 2009 Res released Black Girls Rock that features the huge hit "For Who You Are"
