Bio

**Johnny Gill: American Singer and R&B Legend**

Johnny Gill is an American singer, songwriter, and performer best known for his rich, soulful voice and commanding stage presence. Born on May 22, 1966, in Washington, D.C., Gill began singing at a young age in his family’s gospel group, **Little Johnny Gill & the Wings of Faith**. His early exposure to gospel music shaped the depth and power of his vocals, which later became his signature in R&B and soul. Discovered as a teenager, Johnny quickly gained attention for his mature sound, leading to the release of his self-titled debut album at just 16 years old.

Gill’s career took off when he joined the iconic R&B group **New Edition** in the late 1980s, replacing Bobby Brown. His arrival brought a new level of sophistication and vocal strength to the group, contributing to the success of hits like “Can You Stand the Rain,” “If It Isn’t Love,” and “Boys to Men.” Around the same time, he also pursued a highly successful solo career, earning acclaim for songs such as “My, My, My,” “Rub You the Right Way,” and “Fairweather Friend.” His self-titled 1990 album remains a landmark in contemporary R&B, blending passion, polish, and powerhouse vocals.

In addition to his solo work and New Edition success, Johnny Gill was also a member of the supergroup **L.S.G.**, alongside Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat. Their collaboration produced smooth, sensual hits that showcased the unity of three of R&B’s finest male voices. Over the years, Gill has continued to record and perform, releasing albums such as *Still Winning* and *Game Changer*, both of which reaffirm his longevity and consistency in the music industry.

Beyond his unmistakable voice, Johnny Gill is celebrated for his professionalism, charisma, and influence on generations of R&B singers. His music continues to bridge the gap between classic soul and modern R&B, proving that true talent never fades. Whether performing solo, with New Edition, or alongside his L.S.G. brothers, Johnny Gill remains one of the most dynamic and enduring figures in American music.
