Bio

Ernest “Ernie” Isley (born March 7, 1952, in Cincinnati, Ohio) is a celebrated American guitarist, drummer, singer, and songwriter, best known for adding a Hendrix-style edge to The Isley Brothers’ sound Raised in a household filled with instruments, he began learning drums at age 12 and picked up guitar by age 16 after being inspired by José Feliciano’s cover of “Light My Fire” . He first recorded with the group in 1969 on the funk anthem “It’s Your Thing,” playing bass, and officially joined the band as a full member in 1973, contributing guitar, drums, and percussion on key albums of the era

During the 1970s, Ernie co-wrote and performed on many of The Isley Brothers’ most iconic tracks—“That Lady,” “Summer Breeze,” “Fight the Power,” “For the Love of You,” “Voyage to Atlantis,” and “Between the Sheets”—his signature guitar riffs defining many of their biggest hits. His multi-instrumental prowess and melodic leadership helped the group seamlessly blend rock, soul, funk, and R\&B, earning them gold and platinum accolades and cementing their place in music history

In 1984, Ernie took a creative turn by forming Isley-Jasper-Isley with Marvin Isley and brother-in-law Chris Jasper, before launching his solo career with the 1990 album *High Wire*. Critics praised *High Wire* for its kaleidoscope of tight songwriting, emotional vocals, and featuring his deft guitar work—elements that showcased his talent beyond the family ensemble. Since then, he has intermittently rejoined The Isley Brothers for recordings and tours into the 2010s and 2020s, while also collaborating with artists like Janet Jackson, Joss Stone, and Carlos Santana

Beyond performing, Ernie is recognized for his songwriting chops—credited on well-known songs like "Footsteps in the Dark" (famously sampled by Ice Cube in “It Was a Good Day”) and co-writing "That Lady" and "Take Me to the Next Phase" ([en.wikipedia.org][1], [songhall.org][3]). His work earned him inductions into both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (1992, with the Isley Brothers) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2020). Ernie also received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music in 2016 and remains active as a mentor, guest lecturer, and touring musician.

Today, Ernie Isley continues to share his artistry and legacy with audiences, still touring with Ronald Isley and involved in musical education. His life and career embody the spirit of innovation and soulful musicality that defines The Isley Brothers’ expansive influence.
