Michael “Chicago Mike” Sumler, a vibrant and multifaceted performer best known for his work with Kool & the Gang, passed away at the age of 71 following a car crash in Mableton, Georgia, on May 25, 2025. Born on November 1, 1953, in Chicago, Sumler grew up in the Kenwood neighborhood and the Stateway Gardens housing projects. He attended Bond Elementary School and Harper High School, where his passion for music and performance began to take shape.

In the early 1980s, Sumler led a local Chicago band called Power Pac. His dynamic stage presence caught the attention of a Kool & the Gang security team member, leading to an introduction to the band. Initially joining as a wardrobe stylist in 1985, Sumler's role quickly expanded. He became the group's hype man, energizing audiences with his dance moves and charisma, and also contributed as a backup vocalist and tambourine player. His tenure with Kool & the Gang spanned from 1985 to 2015, during which he played a significant role in the band's live performances and public image.

Beyond his onstage contributions, Sumler was known for his mentorship of aspiring musicians and his involvement in community events. He was instrumental in organizing LeKool champagne events and was in the process of opening a concert venue at the time of his passing. His dedication to the music industry and his community left a lasting impact on those who knew him.

Sumler is survived by his daughters, Monica Ford and Elisia White; his son, Alexander Jenkins; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life is scheduled for June 9 at Emanuel’s Chapel Funeral Home in Chicago, with a wake and funeral service to follow on June 10 at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church.
