Bio

Marcus Anderson is a contemporary jazz and fusion saxophonist from Spartanburg, South Carolina. Growing up in a large musical family, he was immersed in gospel and jazz from a young age — his father introduced him to jazz and he often performed in church with his older siblings. (Légère Reeds) He further developed his craft studying at North Carolina Central University (NCCU), where he was part of the school’s respected jazz ensemble under Dr. Ira Wiggins; later he studied under prominent mentors including Branford Marsalis and gospel saxophonist Donald Hayes. (Légère Reeds)

Over the years, Marcus Anderson has built a reputation for blending jazz with soul, R&B, funk, pop, and rock — creating a hybrid style that appeals to a wide audience. (majorscalemanagement.com) He’s recorded many albums (reportedly 18 studio albums) and achieved multiple chart successes, including several #1 hits on the Billboard Smooth Jazz chart and recognition on SiriusXM’s Watercolors programming. A major turning point in his career was when he caught the attention of legendary artist Prince. From around 2012, Anderson joined Prince’s band The New Power Generation as saxophonist, touring and performing on projects such as Hit N Run Phase 2. (Apple Music - Web Player) He later described his time with Prince as being like “grad school, business classes, and etiquette school all wrapped into one,” noting how deeply it influenced his musicianship and professionalism. (ABC11 Raleigh-Durham)

Beyond music, Anderson is also an entrepreneur and innovator. In 2015 he launched a coffee brand called AND Coffee — reflecting his love of coffee and music — and even paired musical projects with his coffee offerings. (WUNC) He also founded a music-and-culture event, Jazz AND Coffee Escape Festival, aimed at bringing together fans of jazz music and coffee culture in a relaxed, community-oriented setting. (WUNC)

In addition, Anderson is committed to giving back and supporting the next generation of artists. Through the Marcus Anderson Foundation (MAF), he works on educational initiatives, mentorship, and community-based arts programs — helping aspiring musicians access instruments, training, and opportunities. All in all, Marcus Anderson stands out not only for his versatility and vibrant saxophone-driven music, but also for his entrepreneurial spirit and desire to cultivate community. From soulful jazz grooves to global stages, coffee ventures to philanthropy, his journey embodies modern artistry that blends creativity, business, and heart.
