Bio

Cameo is one of the most iconic funk groups to emerge from the 1970s, known for their infectious grooves, innovative sound, and unmistakable visual style. Originally formed as the New York City Players before relocating to Atlanta, the band evolved into Cameo and quickly built a reputation for blending funk, R&B, and dance music into a high-energy, genre-defining sound. At the center of the group’s identity is frontman Larry Blackmon, whose charismatic presence, signature codpiece, and talk-box vocals became synonymous with the band’s image.

Cameo achieved massive commercial success in the 1980s with a string of hits that dominated radio and dance floors. Songs like *“Word Up!”*, *“Candy,”* and *“Single Life”* showcased their ability to fuse catchy hooks with tight musicianship and futuristic production. “Word Up!” in particular became a cultural phenomenon, crossing over into pop charts and remaining a staple in film, television, and advertising for decades.

Beyond their chart success, Cameo played a major role in shaping the sound of modern funk and influencing countless artists across genres. Their music has been widely sampled in hip-hop and R&B, and their bold aesthetic helped redefine what a funk band could look and sound like. With a legacy that spans decades, Cameo continues to be celebrated for their creativity, longevity, and lasting impact on popular music.
